Bangladesh’s Hindu minority reports incidents of hate crimes

In recent months, reports of hate crimes against Bangladesh’s Hindu minority have intensified, raising concerns about the safety and rights of this community in a predominantly Muslim nation. The Hindu population in Bangladesh, which has been steadily declining over the years, currently constitutes about 8-10% of the country’s total population of approximately 170 million. This demographic shift has been attributed to various factors, including migration, religious persecution, and socio-economic challenges.

The incidents reported include vandalism of temples, physical assaults, and threats against individuals identified as Hindus. In December 2025, a series of attacks on Hindu temples in the southern district of Barisal drew national attention, prompting widespread condemnation from human rights organizations and local activists. Eyewitness accounts describe how groups of individuals stormed temples, damaging idols and sacred artifacts, while others reported receiving threats for participating in religious ceremonies.

The rise in hate crimes against Hindus in Bangladesh is not a new phenomenon. Historical tensions between religious communities have often flared into violence, particularly during politically charged periods. The 2013 Shahbagh Movement, which called for capital punishment for war criminals, and the 2014 general elections were marked by significant communal violence. More recently, the 2021 Durga Puja celebrations saw a wave of violence against Hindus, including the desecration of idols and attacks on worshippers, which led to international outcry.

The current situation has been exacerbated by the political climate in Bangladesh. The ruling Awami League party, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has faced criticism for its handling of communal violence. While the government has condemned the attacks and promised to take action, many in the Hindu community feel that the measures taken have been insufficient. Activists argue that the lack of accountability for perpetrators of hate crimes has fostered an environment of impunity, further endangering minority communities.

The implications of these hate crimes extend beyond the immediate safety of the Hindu population. They raise questions about the secular fabric of Bangladesh, which was founded on principles of religious pluralism. The Constitution of Bangladesh guarantees freedom of religion, yet the increasing frequency of attacks against minorities suggests a growing intolerance that could undermine these foundational values.

International human rights organizations have called on the Bangladeshi government to take stronger measures to protect minority communities. Reports from organizations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have documented the rise in violence against Hindus and other religious minorities, urging the government to ensure justice for victims and to hold perpetrators accountable. The United Nations has also expressed concern over the treatment of minorities in Bangladesh, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach to safeguard their rights.

In response to the rising tide of violence, local Hindu organizations have mobilized to advocate for their rights and safety. Community leaders are calling for greater awareness and solidarity among different religious groups to combat hate and promote coexistence. Initiatives aimed at fostering interfaith dialogue and understanding have emerged as potential pathways to mitigate tensions and build a more inclusive society.

The situation for Hindus in Bangladesh is emblematic of broader issues facing religious minorities in various parts of the world. As globalization and migration continue to reshape demographics, the challenge of ensuring the rights and safety of minority communities remains critical. The experiences of Bangladesh’s Hindus serve as a reminder of the need for vigilance in protecting human rights and promoting tolerance in increasingly diverse societies.

As the international community watches closely, the future of Bangladesh’s Hindu minority hangs in the balance. The government’s response to these incidents will be crucial in determining whether the country can uphold its commitment to secularism and religious freedom. The ongoing situation underscores the importance of addressing hate crimes and fostering a culture of respect and coexistence among all religious communities in Bangladesh.
