Mumbai has been identified as the Indian city with the highest road traffic CO₂ emissions per kilometer, according to a recent study. The research, conducted as part of the CHETNA project, highlights the impact of vehicle density on emissions in major metropolitan areas. Delhi and Bengaluru rank among the top three cities for road traffic emissions, particularly in terms of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) pollution.
The study utilized advanced mapping techniques to analyze emissions across 15 cities, providing data at a 500-meter resolution. This detailed approach allows for a clearer understanding of pollution hotspots and the factors contributing to high emissions levels. The findings underscore the urgent need for effective urban planning and transportation policies to mitigate air pollution in these densely populated areas.
Experts emphasize that addressing vehicle emissions is crucial for improving air quality and public health. The study’s results are expected to inform policymakers and stakeholders as they work towards sustainable solutions to reduce urban traffic emissions and enhance the livability of Indian cities.
