Interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS to come close to Earth: Are we safe?

Interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS is set to make a close approach to Earth in early 2026, raising questions about the potential implications of its passage. Discovered in 2019 by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS), this comet is notable for its origin outside the solar system, making it one of the few known interstellar objects to visit our planetary neighborhood.

The comet is expected to reach its closest point to Earth on February 2, 2026, when it will be approximately 1.6 million kilometers (about 1 million miles) away.
