Chile elects far-right Jose Antonio Kast as next president

SANTIAGO, Chile — In a significant political shift, Chile has elected far-right candidate José Antonio Kast as its 38th president, marking a departure from the center-left leadership that has characterized much of the country’s recent history. Kast, a former congressman and leader of the Republican Party, secured victory in a run-off election held on December 17, 2021, defeating leftist candidate Gabriel Boric, who had garnered considerable support among younger voters.

Kast’s campaign focused on a platform of law and order, economic liberalization, and a rejection of the leftist policies that have been prominent in Chilean politics since the end of Augusto Pinochet’s military dictatorship in 1990. His victory is seen as a response to the social unrest that erupted in Chile in late 2019, when widespread protests against inequality and the high cost of living led to calls for a new constitution. The unrest highlighted deep-seated frustrations with the political establishment and the economic model that has been in place since the transition to democracy.

Kast’s ascent to the presidency is emblematic of a broader trend in Latin America, where several countries have seen the rise of right-wing leaders in response to economic challenges and social discontent. His election comes at a time when many Chileans are grappling with the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, which exacerbated existing inequalities and strained public services.

The run-off election saw Kast receive approximately 56% of the vote, compared to Boric’s 44%. Voter turnout was reported at around 55%, a slight decrease from the previous presidential election in 2017. Kast’s support was particularly strong in rural areas and among older voters, while Boric found favor in urban centers and among younger demographics.

Kast’s political ideology is rooted in conservative values, and he has been a vocal critic of leftist movements in Chile and abroad. He has expressed admiration for Pinochet’s economic policies, which he argues laid the groundwork for Chile’s current economic success. However, his views on social issues, including immigration and LGBTQ+ rights, have drawn criticism from various sectors of society. Kast has advocated for stricter immigration controls and has opposed the legalization of same-sex marriage, which has raised concerns among human rights advocates.

The implications of Kast’s presidency are significant for Chile’s political landscape and its ongoing constitutional process. Following the 2019 protests, Chileans voted in favor of drafting a new constitution to replace the one established during Pinochet’s regime. A constitutional convention was elected in 2021, and the process has been closely watched both domestically and internationally. Kast’s election raises questions about the future of this process, as he has expressed skepticism regarding the need for a new constitution and has called for a more conservative approach to governance.

Kast’s administration is expected to prioritize economic growth and security, with a focus on attracting foreign investment and reducing public spending. His economic policies may include tax cuts and deregulation, which he argues will stimulate job creation and economic development. However, critics warn that such measures could exacerbate existing inequalities and undermine social programs that support the most vulnerable populations.

Internationally, Kast’s election may shift Chile’s foreign policy alignment. He has indicated a preference for closer ties with the United States and a more critical stance toward leftist governments in the region, such as those in Venezuela and Cuba. This could lead to a reevaluation of Chile’s role in regional organizations and its approach to international trade agreements.

As Kast prepares to take office, he faces the challenge of uniting a deeply polarized nation. His victory has sparked protests from Boric supporters, who fear that his presidency could roll back social progress and deepen divisions within Chilean society. The political landscape remains contentious, and Kast’s ability to govern effectively will depend on his capacity to address the concerns of those who oppose him while fulfilling the promises made to his supporters.

Kast’s inauguration is scheduled for March 11, 2022, and as he steps into the role of president, the eyes of Chile and the world will be watching closely to see how his administration navigates the complex issues facing the nation. The outcome of his presidency will likely have lasting implications for Chile’s political trajectory and its social fabric in the years to come.
