Delhi records ‘very poor’ and ‘severe’ air pollution levels; visibility affected

Delhi experienced a significant deterioration in air quality over the weekend, with pollution levels reaching alarming heights. On Saturday, residents awoke to a thick blanket of fog and smog that severely impacted visibility across the city. The Air Quality Index (AQI) readings indicated ‘Very Poor’ and ‘Severe’ categories in various locations, prompting health advisories from authorities.

According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), several areas in Delhi recorded AQI levels exceeding 400, which is classified as ‘Severe.’ The highest readings were noted in regions such as Anand Vihar, where the AQI soared to 450, and in areas like ITO and Dwarka, which also reported similarly hazardous levels. The severe air quality has raised alarms among health officials, who warn that prolonged exposure to such pollution can lead to serious health issues, particularly for vulnerable populations including children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions.

Meteorological conditions have played a significant role in exacerbating the pollution crisis. Calm winds and low temperatures have trapped pollutants close to the ground, preventing their dispersion. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) noted that the lack of wind, combined with high humidity levels, contributed to the formation of dense fog, further reducing visibility to as low as 50 meters in some areas. This combination of factors has created a hazardous environment for both pedestrians and drivers, leading to increased traffic accidents and disruptions in daily activities.

The primary contributors to the pollution levels in Delhi have been identified as vehicular emissions and industrial activities, particularly from the National Capital Region (NCR). The Delhi government has long struggled with managing air quality, especially during the winter months when pollution levels typically spike due to a combination of factors including crop burning in neighboring states, increased heating demand, and stagnant weather conditions. The practice of stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana, where farmers burn leftover straw after harvest, has been a contentious issue, contributing significantly to the particulate matter in the air.

In response to the worsening air quality, the Delhi government has implemented several measures aimed at mitigating pollution. These include the introduction of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), which outlines a series of emergency measures to be activated based on the severity of pollution levels. Measures can include restrictions on construction activities, a ban on the use of diesel generators, and the implementation of the odd-even vehicle scheme, which limits the number of cars on the road based on their license plate numbers. However, the effectiveness of these measures has been a topic of debate, with critics arguing that more comprehensive and long-term solutions are needed.

The implications of the current air quality crisis extend beyond immediate health concerns. Poor air quality has been linked to a range of chronic health issues, including respiratory diseases, cardiovascular problems, and even premature mortality. The economic impact is also significant, as increased healthcare costs and lost productivity due to illness can strain public resources and affect overall economic performance. Furthermore, the persistent air quality issues in Delhi have raised questions about urban planning and environmental policy, highlighting the need for sustainable development practices that prioritize air quality and public health.

As the situation continues to evolve, health officials are urging residents to take precautions. Recommendations include limiting outdoor activities, using air purifiers indoors, and wearing masks when outside. The government has also advised vulnerable populations to remain indoors as much as possible until air quality improves.

The current air pollution crisis in Delhi serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by urban centers in managing air quality. With the winter months approaching, the potential for further deterioration in air quality remains a pressing concern. The situation underscores the need for coordinated efforts at local, state, and national levels to address the root causes of pollution and implement effective strategies for improving air quality in the long term.
