Delhi’s air quality declines as dense fog persists, AQI classified as very poor

Delhi’s air quality has deteriorated significantly in recent days, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) registering levels classified as “very poor.” The decline in air quality has coincided with persistent dense fog, which has enveloped the city, exacerbating the already challenging environmental conditions. As of December 27, 2025, the AQI in several parts of the national capital has reached alarming figures, prompting health advisories and concerns from environmental experts.

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported that the overall AQI in Delhi stood at 320, categorizing it within the “very poor” range. This classification indicates that the air quality poses health risks to the general population, particularly vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions. Specific areas of the city, including Anand Vihar and ITO, recorded even higher levels, with AQI readings exceeding 350, which falls into the “severe” category.

The current air quality crisis is attributed to a combination of factors, including meteorological conditions and local pollution sources. The dense fog, a common occurrence during the winter months in Delhi, has trapped pollutants close to the ground, preventing their dispersion. This phenomenon is particularly pronounced during December and January when temperatures drop, leading to an increase in the use of heating sources and vehicular emissions.

In addition to meteorological factors, local sources of pollution have contributed to the deteriorating air quality. Construction activities, industrial emissions, and vehicular traffic are significant contributors to the particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) levels in the air. The burning of biomass and waste, a practice prevalent in the surrounding regions, further exacerbates the situation. Authorities have noted that the combination of these factors creates a perfect storm for poor air quality during the winter months.

The implications of deteriorating air quality are far-reaching. Health experts warn that prolonged exposure to very poor air quality can lead to respiratory issues, cardiovascular diseases, and other serious health problems. Hospitals in Delhi have reported an increase in patients suffering from respiratory ailments, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The health burden associated with air pollution is particularly concerning given the ongoing challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has already strained healthcare resources.

In response to the worsening air quality, the Delhi government has implemented several measures aimed at mitigating pollution levels. These include increased monitoring of industrial emissions, stricter enforcement of construction regulations, and public awareness campaigns to encourage the use of public transportation and reduce vehicular emissions. Additionally, the government has urged residents to limit outdoor activities, particularly during periods of high pollution.

The situation in Delhi is not unique; many urban centers in India face similar challenges with air quality, particularly during the winter months. The Indian government has recognized air pollution as a critical public health issue and has initiated various programs aimed at improving air quality across the country. However, the effectiveness of these measures has been debated, and many experts argue that more comprehensive and sustained efforts are needed to address the root causes of pollution.

The persistence of dense fog and poor air quality in Delhi raises questions about the long-term implications for public health and environmental policy. As climate change continues to influence weather patterns, cities like Delhi may face more frequent and severe air quality crises. The need for coordinated action at both the local and national levels is essential to combat the ongoing challenges posed by air pollution.

As the winter season progresses, residents of Delhi are advised to stay informed about air quality levels and take necessary precautions to protect their health. The current situation serves as a reminder of the urgent need for effective environmental policies and public health initiatives to ensure cleaner air for all.
