John Robertson, the former Scottish footballer renowned for his time with Nottingham Forest and Derby County, has passed away at the age of 72. His death was confirmed by family members on October 24, 2023. Robertson’s contributions to the sport, particularly during the late 1970s and early 1980s, have left a lasting legacy in the world of football.

Born on December 20, 1950, in Edinburgh, Scotland, Robertson began his career at Heart of Midlothian before moving to Nottingham Forest in 1970. Under the management of Brian Clough, Robertson became a pivotal figure in the team’s success. Clough famously described him as “a Picasso of our game,” highlighting his exceptional dribbling skills and creativity on the field. Robertson’s playing style was characterized by his ability to deliver precise crosses and score crucial goals, making him a key asset to his teams.

During his tenure at Nottingham Forest, Robertson played a significant role in the club’s historic achievements. He was part of the squad that won the English First Division title in 1978, followed by back-to-back European Cups in 1979 and 1980. These victories marked Nottingham Forest as one of the dominant forces in European football during that era. Robertson’s performance in the 1980 European Cup final against Hamburg, where he provided the assist for the only goal of the match, is particularly remembered as a highlight of his career.

After leaving Nottingham Forest in 1983, Robertson joined Derby County, where he continued to showcase his talents. He played for Derby until 1986, contributing to the team’s efforts in the English Football League. His time at Derby County further solidified his reputation as one of the finest wingers of his generation. In total, Robertson made over 300 appearances for Nottingham Forest and scored more than 80 goals, establishing himself as a club legend.

Internationally, Robertson earned 28 caps for the Scotland national team between 1974 and 1982. He participated in the 1978 FIFA World Cup held in Argentina, where Scotland faced a challenging group that included the Netherlands and West Germany. Although Scotland did not advance past the group stage, Robertson’s inclusion in the squad underscored his status as one of the top players in the country at the time.

Following his retirement from professional football, Robertson transitioned into coaching and management. He held various roles, including a stint as a coach at Nottingham Forest and later as a manager at clubs in the lower divisions of English football. His experience and knowledge of the game contributed to the development of younger players, and he remained involved in football at various levels throughout his life.

Robertson’s passing has elicited tributes from former teammates, fans, and football associations. Nottingham Forest released a statement expressing their condolences, stating that Robertson’s impact on the club and the sport will not be forgotten. Many former players and managers have taken to social media to share their memories of Robertson, highlighting his skill, dedication, and the joy he brought to the game.

The significance of Robertson’s career extends beyond his individual achievements. He was part of a generation of players who helped elevate the profile of Scottish football during a time when the sport was gaining popularity in the UK and abroad. His contributions to Nottingham Forest and the national team are often cited in discussions about the greatest players in Scottish football history.

As the football community mourns the loss of John Robertson, his legacy as a talented winger and a beloved figure in the sport will endure. His influence on the game, particularly at Nottingham Forest, will be remembered by fans and players alike for years to come. The impact of his career serves as a reminder of the rich history of football in Scotland and the enduring spirit of the players who have shaped the game.
