HONOLULU, Hawaii — In a thrilling conclusion to the 2023 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, the University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors secured a dramatic 35-31 victory over the University of California Golden Bears on December 24, 2023. The game, held at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex in Honolulu, showcased a back-and-forth contest that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the final whistle.

The Rainbow Warriors entered the game with a record of 7-5, having finished fourth in the Mountain West Conference. In contrast, the Golden Bears, with a record of 6-6, represented the Pac-12 Conference, marking their first bowl appearance since 2021. The matchup was significant not only for the teams involved but also for the local economy, as the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl has become a staple of the holiday season in Honolulu, attracting visitors and generating revenue for the region.

The game began with a strong offensive showing from both teams. California struck first, with quarterback Jack Plummer connecting with wide receiver J. Michael Sturdivant for a 45-yard touchdown pass just five minutes into the first quarter. The Golden Bears’ defense, known for its aggressive play, initially stifled Hawaii’s offense, forcing a three-and-out on the Rainbow Warriors’ first possession.

However, Hawaii responded quickly, with quarterback Brayden Schager leading a methodical drive that culminated in a 12-yard touchdown run by running back Dedrick Parson. The first quarter ended with the score tied at 7-7, setting the stage for a competitive matchup.

As the game progressed, both teams exchanged touchdowns, with California regaining the lead in the second quarter on a 22-yard field goal by kicker Dario Longhetto. Hawaii answered with a touchdown pass from Schager to wide receiver Zion Bowens, giving the Rainbow Warriors a 14-10 lead. The back-and-forth continued, with California’s offense responding with a touchdown run by Jaydn Ott, putting the Golden Bears ahead 17-14 at halftime.

The second half saw a shift in momentum as Hawaii’s defense tightened, limiting California’s scoring opportunities. The Rainbow Warriors capitalized on this shift, with Schager throwing a 25-yard touchdown pass to tight end Caleb Phillips, reclaiming the lead at 21-17. California responded with a touchdown of its own, as Plummer connected with Sturdivant again, this time for a 30-yard score, bringing the Golden Bears back in front at 24-21.

As the fourth quarter unfolded, both teams displayed resilience. Hawaii tied the game at 24-24 with a field goal by Matthew Shipley, setting up a tense final stretch. California regained the lead once more with a touchdown run by Ott, making the score 31-24 with just over five minutes remaining in the game.

In a critical moment, Hawaii’s offense mounted a determined drive, culminating in a touchdown pass from Schager to receiver Kalen Phillips, narrowing the gap to 31-30. With the game on the line, Hawaii opted for a two-point conversion attempt, which Schager successfully executed with a run, giving the Rainbow Warriors a 32-31 lead.

California, needing a touchdown to reclaim the lead, pushed down the field in the closing minutes. However, Hawaii’s defense held firm, forcing the Golden Bears into a fourth-and-goal situation. With just seconds remaining, California’s attempt to score was thwarted, allowing Hawaii to take possession and run out the clock.

The victory marked a significant achievement for Hawaii, as it was the program’s first bowl win since 2019. The Rainbow Warriors’ performance in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl not only showcased their resilience and determination but also highlighted the growth of the program under head coach Timmy Chang, who has been at the helm since 2022.

The implications of this victory extend beyond the immediate joy of the players and fans. A bowl win can enhance recruiting efforts, as it signals a competitive program capable of achieving success on a national stage. Additionally, the economic impact of the bowl game is substantial, with local businesses benefiting from increased tourism and hospitality spending during the holiday season.

As the 2023 college football season concludes, the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl serves as a reminder of the sport’s ability to unite communities and provide thrilling entertainment. For Hawaii, the victory not only adds to the program’s storied history but also sets a positive tone for the upcoming season, as the Rainbow Warriors look to build on their success and continue their ascent in college football.
