ALIGARH, India — A teacher at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) was shot twice in the head by an unidentified gunman on campus on December 25, 2025. The victim, Danish Rao, succumbed to his injuries shortly after being admitted to a local hospital, prompting widespread condemnation and raising concerns about safety on university campuses in India.

The incident occurred around 11:30 AM local time when Rao was reportedly walking near the university’s library. Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as the gunman, who was riding a motorcycle, approached Rao and opened fire before fleeing the scene. University security and local police were alerted immediately, and Rao was rushed to the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the shooting, with police examining CCTV footage from the campus and surrounding areas to identify the assailant. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the motive behind the attack remains unclear. University officials have expressed their shock and grief over the incident, emphasizing the need for enhanced security measures on campus.

Danish Rao, a respected member of the university’s faculty, was known for his contributions to the field of education and his dedication to students. Colleagues and students have expressed their condolences, describing him as a passionate educator who had a significant impact on many lives. The university community is mourning the loss, and memorial services are being planned to honor his memory.

The shooting has sparked a broader conversation about safety on university campuses in India, particularly in light of recent incidents of violence against educators and students. Critics have called for increased security measures, including better surveillance systems and more police presence on campuses. The incident has also raised questions about the effectiveness of existing safety protocols and the responsibility of educational institutions to protect their staff and students.

In recent years, there have been several high-profile cases of violence in educational institutions across India, prompting calls for reform. The Indian government has been urged to take action to ensure the safety of students and faculty, with many advocating for stricter laws and regulations regarding firearms and campus security.

The Aligarh Muslim University, established in 1920, is one of India’s premier educational institutions, attracting students from across the country and abroad. It has a rich history of academic excellence and social activism. However, incidents like the shooting of Danish Rao threaten to undermine the sense of safety and community that the university has cultivated over the decades.

In the wake of the shooting, the university administration has announced a series of emergency meetings to address security concerns and to discuss potential measures to enhance safety on campus. This includes reviewing existing security protocols and considering the implementation of additional surveillance and emergency response systems.

The implications of this incident extend beyond the immediate tragedy of losing a valued educator. It highlights the ongoing challenges faced by educational institutions in maintaining a safe environment for learning and teaching. As universities grapple with issues of violence and safety, the need for comprehensive strategies to address these concerns becomes increasingly urgent.

The shooting of Danish Rao is a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities present in educational settings and the importance of fostering a secure atmosphere for students and faculty alike. As investigations continue, the university community and the broader public await answers regarding the motive behind the attack and the steps that will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.

As the nation reflects on this tragic event, it serves as a call to action for policymakers, educators, and law enforcement to work collaboratively to ensure that educational institutions remain safe havens for learning and growth. The loss of a dedicated teacher not only affects the immediate community but also resonates throughout the educational landscape, underscoring the need for vigilance and proactive measures in safeguarding the future of education in India.
