Colombia’s National Liberation Army (ELN) has announced a three-day period during which civilians in areas under its control are advised to remain indoors. This directive begins on Sunday and is part of the group’s military exercises, which they claim are a response to perceived threats of intervention from U.S. President Donald Trump.
Earlier this month, Trump stated that any nation involved in the production and sale of cocaine to the United States could face military action. The ELN’s announcement reflects its opposition to what it describes as “imperialist” threats from the U.S. government.
The ELN, which has been involved in Colombia’s long-standing conflict, aims to assert its presence and capabilities amid rising tensions surrounding drug trafficking and international relations. The group has historically engaged in armed conflict with the Colombian government and has been designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S.
As the situation develops, the Colombian government has not yet issued a formal response to the ELN’s announcement or Trump’s comments. The impact of these military exercises on local communities and the broader security landscape in Colombia remains to be seen.
