India develops its own regional trade agreements, starting with New Zealand pact

India has embarked on a strategic initiative to establish its own regional trade agreements, beginning with a recently signed pact with New Zealand. This development marks a significant shift in India’s trade policy, particularly in the context of its previous withdrawal from the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) in 2020. The new agreement with New Zealand is seen as a foundational step in India’s broader goal of enhancing its trade relationships within the Asia-Pacific region.

The trade agreement with New Zealand, finalized in December 2025, aims to bolster economic ties between the two nations by reducing tariffs and facilitating smoother trade in goods and services. The pact is expected to enhance bilateral trade, which stood at approximately $1.8 billion in 2022. Under the terms of the agreement, India will eliminate tariffs on a range of New Zealand exports, including dairy products, wine, and certain fruits, while New Zealand will lower tariffs on Indian textiles, machinery, and pharmaceuticals.

This move is part of India’s broader strategy to engage more deeply with regional economies, particularly in the wake of its decision to opt out of the RCEP, a trade bloc that includes 15 Asia-Pacific nations. India’s withdrawal from RCEP was primarily driven by concerns over the potential impact on its domestic industries and the trade deficit with China, which was projected to widen under the agreement. By pursuing bilateral agreements, India aims to negotiate terms that are more favorable to its economic interests.

The New Zealand trade agreement is not an isolated development; it is part of a series of negotiations that India has initiated with various countries in the region. In recent years, India has been actively seeking to strengthen its trade relationships with nations such as Australia, the United Kingdom, and the members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). These efforts are indicative of India’s intent to create a network of trade agreements that can collectively serve as an alternative to the RCEP framework.

The implications of this new trade agreement extend beyond mere economic metrics. By establishing its own trade agreements, India is positioning itself as a more influential player in regional trade dynamics. The agreement with New Zealand could serve as a template for future negotiations with other countries, allowing India to tailor its trade policies to better suit its domestic priorities while fostering international partnerships.

Moreover, the timing of this agreement is significant. As global supply chains continue to evolve in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, countries are increasingly looking to diversify their trade relationships. India’s proactive approach to securing bilateral agreements can be seen as a response to these changing dynamics, as it seeks to reduce its reliance on any single market and enhance its resilience against global economic fluctuations.

The New Zealand trade pact also reflects India’s broader economic goals, including its ambition to become a $5 trillion economy by the mid-2020s. By enhancing trade with New Zealand and other countries, India aims to stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and attract foreign investment. The agreement is expected to provide Indian businesses with greater access to New Zealand’s markets, particularly in sectors where India has a competitive advantage, such as information technology and pharmaceuticals.

In addition to economic benefits, the trade agreement is likely to have geopolitical implications. Strengthening ties with New Zealand, a member of the Commonwealth and a partner in various international forums, could enhance India’s standing in the Asia-Pacific region. This is particularly relevant as India seeks to counterbalance China’s growing influence in the area.

As India continues to negotiate additional trade agreements, the success of the New Zealand pact will be closely monitored. Stakeholders, including businesses and policymakers, will be looking for tangible outcomes in terms of trade volume and economic growth. The agreement could also serve as a catalyst for further negotiations with other countries, potentially leading to a more interconnected regional trade landscape.

In conclusion, India’s development of its own regional trade agreements, starting with the pact with New Zealand, represents a significant shift in its trade policy. This initiative not only aims to enhance economic ties with individual countries but also seeks to position India as a key player in the evolving dynamics of regional trade. As India navigates this new path, the outcomes of these agreements will be crucial in shaping its economic future and its role in the global marketplace.
