The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 auction concluded on February 12, 2026, in Mumbai, resulting in significant changes to team rosters and player salaries. The auction, which is a pivotal event in the cricket calendar, saw franchises invest heavily in both established stars and emerging talent as they prepare for the upcoming season.

This year’s auction featured a total of 200 players, with 70 of them being sold to the eight franchises. The total expenditure by the franchises reached approximately INR 2,500 crores (around USD 300 million), reflecting the continued financial growth and popularity of the league. The auction was marked by intense bidding wars, particularly for top-tier players, which underscored the competitive nature of the league.

The franchises are structured to allow for a maximum of 25 players per team, with a minimum of 18 players. Each team has a salary cap of INR 90 crores (approximately USD 11 million), which has been a critical factor in the strategic planning of each franchise. The auction results have reshaped the dynamics of the teams, with several franchises opting to build their squads around a mix of youth and experience.

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) retained their core players, including captain MS Dhoni, while adding new talent such as fast bowler Avesh Khan, who was acquired for INR 15 crores. The franchise’s total expenditure during the auction was INR 80 crores, leaving them with a balance of INR 10 crores under the salary cap.

The Mumbai Indians (MI), known for their aggressive bidding strategies, made headlines by securing star all-rounder Ben Stokes for INR 20 crores. The franchise spent a total of INR 85 crores during the auction, focusing on bolstering their bowling attack with the addition of South African pacer Kagiso Rabada for INR 18 crores.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) made significant moves as well, acquiring Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan for INR 22 crores. The franchise’s total expenditure reached INR 87 crores, as they aimed to strengthen their batting lineup to support captain Virat Kohli.

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) focused on youth, acquiring promising players such as Shubman Gill for INR 25 crores and fast bowler Prasidh Krishna for INR 12 crores. KKR’s total spending was INR 82 crores, reflecting their strategy to invest in young talent while maintaining a competitive edge.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) made a notable acquisition by signing Australian opener David Warner for INR 18 crores. The franchise spent a total of INR 75 crores, emphasizing their commitment to building a strong batting order.

The Rajasthan Royals (RR) took a different approach, securing a mix of international and domestic players, including Indian spinner Ravi Bishnoi for INR 14 crores. Their total expenditure was INR 78 crores, as they aimed to create a balanced squad capable of competing at the highest level.

The Punjab Kings (PBKS) focused on strengthening their bowling attack, acquiring Indian pacer Deepak Chahar for INR 16 crores and Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis for INR 14 crores. The franchise’s total spending was INR 80 crores, reflecting their strategy to enhance their bowling depth.

The Gujarat Titans, the newest franchise in the league, made a splash by signing Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer for INR 25 crores. Their total expenditure during the auction was INR 70 crores, as they sought to establish a competitive team in their inaugural season.

The auction results have significant implications for the upcoming IPL season, which is set to commence on March 25, 2026. The reshuffling of player rosters will create new rivalries and dynamics within the league, as teams look to capitalize on their new acquisitions. The financial investments made during the auction also highlight the IPL’s status as one of the richest and most lucrative cricket leagues globally.

As the teams prepare for the season, the focus will shift to training camps and pre-season matches, where players will have the opportunity to gel and strategize for the challenges ahead. The IPL 2026 season is expected to attract significant viewership, both domestically and internationally, further solidifying the league’s position as a premier sporting event. The outcomes of the auction will undoubtedly play a crucial role in determining the success of each franchise in the upcoming season.
