The United States has expressed strong disapproval of Rwanda’s actions in the ongoing conflict in eastern Congo, accusing the country of breaching a US-brokered peace agreement. This criticism comes as the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group intensifies its military offensive in South Kivu province, resulting in the deaths of over 400 civilians, according to local officials. The US ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, emphasized that those undermining peace efforts would face consequences, referring to them as “spoilers.”
Reports indicate that Rwandan special forces have been spotted in the strategic city of Uvira, further complicating the situation. The M23 rebels, who have been active in the region for years, are seeking to gain control over key areas rich in minerals. The escalation of violence has raised concerns among international observers regarding the stability of the region and the humanitarian impact on local populations. The US has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urged all parties involved to adhere to the terms of the peace agreement to prevent further loss of life and promote stability in eastern Congo.
